How-to Sleep Properly to Avoid Neck and Back Pain

The truth of the matter is, the quality of sleep we should get is just as, if not more, important than quantity. That’s because the way we sleep is important for the overall health of our bodies. 

If you are not sleeping in the proper positions, it can cause numerous pains as the result of straining your neck and back. 

How to Avoid Neck Pain

It’s important to make sure that your neck and shoulders are aligned to prevent neck pain. You want to make sure you aren’t over hunching your shoulders and that you aren’t bending your head too much forward or backward.

How to Avoid Back Pain

Your spine wants to be perfectly aligned all the time, even though it’s flexible for daily activities. If it’s misaligned for a long period of time, it will cause irritation, just like how bad posture causes back pain.  You want to make sure you aren’t overly arching your back or bending your back too much (this happens when you bend your legs too much).

The Best Sleeping Positions

One of the best sleeping positions is sleeping on your side, since that is when your spine is the best aligned. You can also put a pillow between your knees for better alignment. It’s important to use an appropriate sized pillow for neutral cervical alignment. This position, with the use of a pillow, specifically supports your spine’s natural curve. 

Another recommended position is on your back with your arms by your side. Although, sleeping flat on your back can create too much pressure on your back, which can cause lower back pain. You can prevent this by putting a pillow underneath your knees to elevate them or underneath your back for slight arch. 

The Worst Sleeping Positions

The worst sleeping position is sleeping with your knees bent and drawn up to your chin with the chin bent down, creating a curled up “ball-like” position. This not only causes multiple neck and back pains, but also restricts your breathing.

Sleeping on your stomach is also a bad position that strains your neck and creates back pain.

Since it requires you to tilt your head to face one way or another, it strains your neck. This position causes back pain because it doesn’t properly support your spine.
